We first met Xanthoula Dakovanou when she was a member of ‘Trio Tzane’, in which a Bulgarian, a Greek and a Turk came together to make music.
Xanthoula Dakovanou from Greece, Sandrine Monlezun from Bulgaria and Gül Hacer Toruk from Turkey met each other in Paris and decided to join their voices in polyphony. Even though they seemed to be from different cultures, they had much in common. They sang in Greek, Turkish, Bulgarian, Serbian, Macedonian, telling Balkan stories in their own way, mixing vocal improvisations with compositions by young talent. Trio Tzane, as a vocal project, came to life in this way, with three different but harmonic voices
Xanthoula Dakovanou is back in action again with a new company and a brand new CD named ‘I Kira kai i Varka’.The new members of the musical ensemble ‘Anassa’, which Xanthoula Dakovanou is a member of, are the following: Kengo Saito, Ourania Lampropoulou, Guillaume Barraud and Sofia Efklidou.
Xanthoula Dakovanou was born in Athens in 1978 and studied Medicine at the University of Athens and Music Therapy at Paris V University. She started singing traditional Greek music influenced by her grandmother, who used to sing songs from the Epirus mountains and studied the traditionnal singing at the Ethnomusicology Museum in Athens, and later with Martha Frintzila, whom she had the chance to meet and work with. Soon she started singing with the greek polyphonic group ‘Chaonia’, participating in concerts in Greece and abroad. Her interest in musical traditions of the Balkans and Eastern Mediterranean made her discover the Bulgarian and Ottoman singing techniques, which she studied in various stages with masters such as Tzvetanka Varimezova and Ahmet Erdogdular.
She also studied Byzantine music with Sister Mary Keyrouz in Paris, and continues her studies with Spyros Pavlakis in Athens. She also composes music and writes lyrics. Living between Paris and Athens since 2005, she has studied other traditions and collaborated with different musicians. She has sang for various formations of traditional and composed music in Greece, France, Italy, Turkey, Bulgaria, Wales, Ireland, Belgium, Spain and Israel. She has had the chance to sing in theaters like Théâtre du Chatelet, Unesco in Paris, Roman Agora in Athens and others. In Paris, her main projects concern the meeting of different musical traditions in the modal music.
She has created or participated in, among others, Trio Tzane (female balkan Poyphonies), Comptines de Miel et Pistache (Greece, Turkey, Armenia and Kurdistan), and now Anassa (Greece, India, Afghanistan and Japan composition and improvisation project), and she always keeps going.
