Higher Ground
"Playing For Change started off as a project by Mark Johnson in 2009 as he travelled the world recording and filming street buskers, on a mission to inspire connections through music. Once edited together, the sounds and images became tracks built up across timelines and borders, and captured musicians who had never met jamming together. Since then the video for ‘Stand By Me’ has notched up over 30 million views and Playing For Change has become an educational foundation responsible for opening seven music schools for children in South Africa, Nepal, Ghana, Mali and Rwanda. PFC combines unashamedly feel-good song selections with utopian ideals of “bringing peace to the world through music”. At the heart of the project is a cynicism-free zone where even John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’ retains its literal sense – and that has translated into real benefits for the kids and communities involved. The new album features 150 musicians from 15 countries, including Tinariwen, Taj Mahal, Carlos Vives andKeb Mo. Here’s a video from the accompanying DVD: the Playing For Change version of Stevie Wonder’s ‘Higher Ground’."
Playing For Change – Songs Around The World Part 2 (CD/DVD) is out now on Hear Music/Concord/Universal.
